Sacha inchi (Plukenetia volubilis L.) is native to the Peruvian Amazon and is recognised in other parts of the world as a sustainable crop with viable commercial applications. It produces a star-shaped fruit. Its oleaginous seeds are large, with a high content of omega-3, and -6 fatty acids, protein, and antioxidants. It is considered by many to be "superfood” due to its excellent nutritional profile. It was found that the oil contains remarkably high contents of α-linoleic acid (ALA, an Omega 3 fatty acid) and linoleic acid (an Omega 6 fatty acid). Both types of fatty acids are essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). As our body cannot synthesis them, they must be consumed from diet. Sacha inchi oil is therefore classified as an edible oil with the highest proportion of unsaturated fatty acids. As the oil also has a high content of γ- and δ-tocopherols (Vitamine E), it is, despite its high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids, comparably stable against oxidation.
A change in diet over the last century toward a higher total fat and saturated fat content and a sedentary lifestyle has been associated with an increase in the incidence of chronic disorders such as hypertension, diabetes, and atherosclerosis, all of which are stroke risk factors or risk markers. In addition, omega-6 fatty acids are consumed at a higher level compared with omega-3 fatty acids in a standard western diet and they have been implicated in coronary atherogenesis.
Some suggests that consuming sacha inchi may help reduce excess abdominal fat and promote weight loss. Also, sacha inchi is purported to fight depression, reduce cholesterol levels, prevent heart disease, and aid in diabetes management. Applied topically, the oil is used for skin and hair care.
